After the suspension of a prison employee in January, Saxony-Anhalt’s Ministry of Justice acknowledged further problems in the prison staff. The ministry confirmed research by the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung (Tuesday edition), which appears in Halle, according to which a civil servant was relieved of her duties as early as 2021. She is said to have had a sexual relationship with a prisoner in the high-security prison in Burg. “The corresponding disciplinary proceedings are currently underway with the aim of removal from service,” the Ministry of Justice told MZ. Right-wing terrorist and Halle assassin Stephan B. is in prison in Burg.

The judiciary also classified a person from 2020 as problematic: a prisoner candidate hid internally that she herself once had a prisoner in her family. Her father was in prison in Burg from 2009 to 2013, according to MZ research he was serving his sentence for drug trafficking. The Ministry of Justice said in this case: “After the contact became known, legal consequences were drawn and the officer was transferred to another office.” She should have disclosed the private connection to the ex-prisoner.

A candidate had already been temporarily removed from prison service in January because photos on the Internet had suggested that she was too close to the radical right-wing scene. There could be “considerable doubts about the candidate’s suitability,” according to the Justice Department at the time. The woman was forbidden to conduct official business and was banned from entering her workplace.

The Ministry of Justice emphasized to the MZ that the screening of new applicants in prisons in 2021 was “significantly tightened”. There is now a detailed survey “where applicants have to provide full information about contacts/relationships with prisoners, those released, their relatives and friends,” according to the department headed by Minister Franziska Weidinger (CDU). In addition, since October 2021, applicants in prisons have been checked for entries by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.
