In order to let everyone participate in social life, barrier-free media offerings are essential. RTLZWEI has been continuously expanding its range of programs for the hearing and visually impaired for years. Last year, more than a third of the programs on offer could be received with subtitles. The new episodes of the reportage series “Poor Germany – stamping or toiling?” are currently starting on February 8th. with both subtitles and audio description.
RTLZWEI offers numerous barrier-free content and is constantly expanding it. In 2021, the proportion of this content increased by more than 7 percent compared to the previous year. All primetime formats from 8:15 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. now have subtitles, as do the early evening soaps “Köln 50667” and “Berlin – Tag & Nacht” Monday to Friday. The dating show “Love Island” was subtitled live. In 2022, further formats such as the weekly magazine “My New Age” will be added.
More subtitles and audio description
Since 2019, RTLZWEI has also provided an audiovisual description of its formats for visually impaired viewers. A current example are the new episodes of “Armes Deutschland”, which will start on February 8 and have both audio description and subtitles for the hearing impaired. Further in-house productions and feature films that offer completely barrier-free TV will follow.

In the future, we will also be looking at digital distribution channels.”
RTLZWEI works with the Berlin companies to create and broadcast the subtitles and audio descriptions No Limits Media GmbH and GRETA & STARKS GmbH together.
