The German National Committee of the International Press Institute eV (IPI) condemns the restriction of media freedom in Russia through the closure of Deutsche Welle’s offices and the intended withdrawal of broadcasting licenses.

Chairwoman of the IPI and MDR director Prof. Dr. Karola Wille: “The news from Russia fills me with great concern. Freedom of information and freedom of the media are valuable goods that are worthy of protection, worldwide. Only well-informed people can form a well-founded opinion. With the withdrawal of Deutsche Welle’s license, Russia is depriving its citizens of a free source of information. This curtails the human right to freedom of information in Russia. It is completely unacceptable to make free, independent reporting a plaything for political interests.”

The International Press Institute is a global network of editors, media managers and leading journalists headquartered in Vienna. Its mission is to defend media freedom and the free flow of news wherever they are threatened.

The German National Committee of the IPI is a non-profit association. It gathers the supporters of the IPI in Germany and promotes worldwide activities.
