The “Ritter-RNA” is the clear winner of the election of the little hero of biotechnology in the biophoria competition, which the biotechnology industry association BIO Germany announced in the fourth quarter of last year. The competition is part of the theme year “102 Years of Biotechnology”, which was initiated and designed by BIO Germany. It was possible to vote on which little heroine or biotechnology hero changed our lives the most. The little heroes are six cells or cell components that carry out biotechnological processes and are visualized as cartoon characters. With 30 percent of the votes, the Ritter-RNA clearly won ahead of the “Allrounder-Alge” and the “Zauber-Zelle” – tied for 2nd and 3rd place – which each received 17 percent of the votes. At the end of January, an iPad Air, two electronics shopping vouchers worth 150 euros and five sustainably produced drinking bottles were raffled off among the participants.

Oliver Schacht, CEO of BIO Deutschland, comments: “mRNA vaccines have proven to be lifesavers in the pandemic. Thanks to the rapid development and production of this whole new class of vaccines, we were able to break out of permanent lockdown and social distancing. It is therefore not surprising that Ritter RNA received most of the votes as biotechnology’s minor hero, but many of the participants also recognized the potential of RNA for other therapeutic areas, such as cancer, and gave reasons for their choice . I am pleased about the great interest in the competition and the many well-founded justifications that were submitted. This shows that awareness of the potential of biotechnology has grown enormously.”

“The knight RNA is the clear winner of the competition. However, the other five heroes fought a neck-and-neck race,” adds Viola Bronsema, Managing Director of BIO Germany. “Obviously, the choice wasn’t easy for the participants, which is understandable. Because each and every one of these heroes plays an important role in our everyday lives, whether it’s eating and drinking, doing laundry, our clothes and much more. Biotechnology is also holding up sustainable solutions for many social challenges. That is why we are committed to the use and promotion of this key technology.”

About the Biophoria Contest 2021

In the 2021 biophoria competition, participants were asked to vote on which of the six little heroes of biotechnology performed the most convincingly. The choices were: the “all-rounder algae”, the “energy enzyme”, the “mega microbe”, the “professional protein”, the “knight RNA” and the “magic cell”. be who Voting also justified, took part in a raffle with attractive prizes with a total value of 1000 euros. 30 percent of the participants voted for the “knight RNA”, 17 percent each for “all-rounder algae” and “magic cell”, 13 percent for the “energy enzyme”, 12 percent for the “professional protein” and 10 percent for the “mega-microbe”. 739 votes were cast, around 200 participants justified their decision and thus qualified for the competition. The hero theme goes back to the Science Year Bioeconomy of the BMBF: www.wissenschaftsjahr.de/2020-21/.

About the “102 Years of Biotechnology” initiative

In 2019, the term “biotechnology” celebrated its centenary. Karl Ereky was director of the cattle processing cooperative of large Hungarian landowners and author of the German-language book “Biotechnology of Meat, Fat and Milk Production in Large Farms”, in which the term biotechnology came into the world. The publication first appeared in Berlin in 1919. That is why the first theme year “100 years of biotechnology” was launched in 2019, in which milestones in biotechnology of the last 100 years were celebrated for twelve months and a look into the future was also taken. In the theme year “101 Years of Biotechnology” the focus was on the contribution of biotechnology to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations. In 2021, the “Little Heroes” of biotechnology were on the agenda in the theme year “102 Years of Biotechnology”.

The “102 Years of Biotechnology” initiative has the following supporters: Biotechnology Association Berlin-Brandenburg eV (bbb), Biotechnological Student Initiative (btS e. V.), German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), Society for Chemical Technology and Biotechnology (DECHEMA e. V. ), Association of Biology, Life Sciences and Biomedicine (VBIO e. V.), Association of German Engineers (VDI e. V.) and Association for General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM e. V.)
