Berlin’s traffic senator Bettina Jarasch (Greens) is demanding that the federal government develop a concept quickly to prevent traffic collapse in the neighboring areas after the opening of the A100 extension. “You can’t open this 16th construction phase without a traffic concept for the neighboring neighborhoods. I’ll talk to the Federal Minister of Transport about that,” Jarasch told the “Tagesspiegel”. She asked the federal government to limit traffic at the end of the highway section. “It would be irresponsible to simply end the highway with a ramp. We can only gradually allow traffic to flow from the highway onto city streets.
“From 2024 onwards, tens of thousands of cars are expected to be on the highway extension from Neukölln to Treptow every day. Especially at the end of the 3.2-kilometer section at Treptower Park, it is still unclear how the traffic will flow without overloading the surrounding city streets The corresponding planning has not even started so far, as the Autobahn GmbH responsible for the construction now explains.”Currently, no activities are necessary for this concept,” said the state-owned company in response to a written request from MPs Katalin Gennburg (left). It will remain so for the time being: “Planning activities for this will probably not take place until mid-2023,” said Autobahn GmbH when asked by “Tagesspiegel”.
