The United States closes federal prisons after the death of two inmates

The United States government ordered this Monday a national lockdown of its federal prison system dAfter two inmates were killed and two others were injured during a gang altercation at a federal prison in Texas.

The incident It happened around 11:30 a.m. Monday at the federal prison in Beaumont, Texas. Members of the violent MS-13 gang were involved in the altercation, said two people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss publicly about an ongoing investigation.

The attack is just the latest example of the serious violence facing the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The agency has had to deal with multiple crises in recent years, including widespread staffing shortages, employee misconduct and a spate of jailbreaks and prisoner deaths.

The lockdown, which applies to the more than 120 federal prisons the agency manages across the country, was prompted by fears that possible retaliation and violence could spread to other facilities.
