Traditional supply chains for building materials are being broken up more and more as a result of increasing digitization. This is shown by a survey conducted by the global strategy consultancy LEK Consulting among building contractors in Germany, Great Britain, France and Spain. “Relationships between manufacturers of building products, traditional builders’ merchants and their customers are coming under strain,” said Tom Diplock, Partner at LEK Consulting and expert in building and building materials. “Customer behavior and expectations are evolving rapidly, accelerated by Covid-19 and a younger, less experienced generation of ‘digital natives’ among tradespeople and contractors, as well as the increasing importance of online retailers.”

Sebastian Olbert, Managing Director and Partner at LEK Consulting Munich and an expert in the field of industrial goods marketing and digitization adds: “Both manufacturers and retailers need to find ways to effectively connect with their customers via digital channels and better understand their mindsets, or they risk of being left behind. Our survey shows that in some European countries – including Germany – Amazon is now also the online supplier of construction products most frequently used by craftsmen and building contractors.” Therefore, it is crucial to understand how to learn from Amazon and how to best use this platform for your business.

The survey results point to key questions that will help building product manufacturers, distributors and other channel partners to understand the changes in their market and strategize to make the most of the new opportunities. The survey results uncovered several important insights: For example, contractors do extensive research before most of their purchases, especially when purchasing heavy building materials, hand tools and equipment, i.e. more expensive products. Younger population groups research more often and use mobile websites and apps in particular for this purpose. Online and mobile shopping in construction will remain at high levels beyond the pandemic. Amazon’s presence in the construction industry is growing rapidly.
