In recent months, the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated dramatically, leading to significant displacement of civilians. 24.4 million people – 55% of the population – are in need of humanitarian assistance in 2022, a 30% increase from the previous year.
The harsh winter weather has also resulted in road closures in many provinces and the disruption of flights to and from Kabul Airport, including flights carrying relief supplies.
Despite this, UNHCR’s emergency aid in Afghanistan continues. The humanitarian organization has ramped up winter assistance and cash assistance to the most vulnerable displaced families. During 2021, UNHCR assisted 1.1 million displaced and vulnerable people and helped 3 million people gain better access to infrastructure and services.
The ability of UNHCR and its partners to further strengthen preparedness and response to emergencies depends heavily on the timely availability of resources.
„The private sector has long been an important partner for UNHCR. Innovative, collaborative efforts like this Mars Panda auction allow us to reach out to broad audiences to mobilize resources to support much-needed humanitarian efforts.”said Ann Moey, Partnerships Lead (for Singapore), UNHCR.
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are digital collectibles represented by code on a decentralized digital ledger called the blockchain. Each NFT can be bought and sold like a physical item, but the blockchain stores an immutable record of ownership and transaction history. NFTs have experienced a meteoric rise over the past year, with the most expensive example for almost $70 million auctioned at Christie’s auction house.
Mars Panda is a unique platform with a KYC (Know Your Customer) process that identifies and verifies each customer upon opening an account. This has led to it being chosen as the NFT platform for Singapore’s first NFT charity auction, Blockchain for Good by Blockchain Association of Singapore, which raised more than SGD$400,000 for the National Trade Union Council U-Care Fund in September 2021, and subsequently Singaporean local newspaper The Straits Times with theirs first ever NFT auction which raised over SGD$21,000 for the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.
Note to Editors: Mars Panda is currently awaiting approval from the Singapore Commissioner of Charities to conduct campaign activities in Singapore. In the meantime, the campaign will start outside of Singapore and will ban Singapore residents from participating.
