The inflation rate in Germany is expected to be +4.9% in January 2022. It is measured as the change in the consumer price index (CPI) compared to the same month in the previous year. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports, based on the results available so far, consumer prices are expected to rise by 0.4% compared to December 2021.

Although the base effects from 2021 due to the temporary reduction in VAT and the fall in the price of mineral oil products will no longer apply in 2020, the inflation rate will remain high. Effects caused by the crisis, such as delivery bottlenecks and significant price increases in the upstream economic stages and in energy prices, continue to have an impact here.

The corona pandemic, with its restrictions on public life and the resulting consequences, has made it necessary to change the procedure for updating the goods weights of the HICP for the second year in a row. A corresponding method paper is available on the website of the Federal Statistical Office.
