– If possible, the value should be reached by 2035
– Reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 50% by 2030
Birla Cellulose, the pulp and fiber business of Grasim Industries Ltd., a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, today announced its goal to achieve net zero carbon emissions from all its operations by 2040. If possible, the goal should be reached earlier, namely by 2035. It is the most ambitious goal ever set by a company in the world’s man-made cellulose fibers (MMCF) industry.
The company is also aiming to halve the emission intensity of its greenhouse gases (GHG) by 2030 compared to the base year 2019. Birla Cellulose’s commitment to carbon neutrality and GHG reductions includes Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3 emissions and carbon sequestration in managed forests and is derived using science-based methods.
HK Agarwal, Managing Director of Grasim Industries Ltd and Commercial Director of Birla Cellulose, stated: “It is a natural progression in Birla Cellulose’s global leadership in sustainability. Birla Cellulose’s climate goal is at the heart of its business strategy, which aims to address the risks associated with climate change and to adapt to changing consumer preferences for more sustainable to adapt nature-based and lower-emission products.” He added, “Birla Cellulose has been innovating in the MMCF industry for seven decades and will continue to innovate technologies that will accelerate this transition.”
The roadmap includes increased use of renewable energy in its processes, investments in innovative low-emission technologies, positive net carbon sequestration in its managed forests, and a strong focus on the circular economy.
Currently, around 40% of the energy used to operate Birla Cellulose worldwide comes from renewable sources. Additionally, in a 2019 assessment by E&Y, the carbon sequestered in directly managed forests exceeded total Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from global sites for the year.
Birla Cellulose is an industry leader in sustainability strategies such as sustainable forest management (#1 in Canopy Hot Button Ranking 2021) and has set the industry benchmark for the lowest water intensity for viscose and lyocell production. The company recently commissioned the world’s first zero liquid discharge (ZLD) facility in the man-made cellulosic fiber (MMCF) industry and operates the largest social responsibility program in the industry.
