Instead of finding a convincing line in the Ukraine conflict, the SPD’s discussions become increasingly confused and less credible. While former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder accuses Kiev of saber-rattling, when Russia had deployed around 100,000 soldiers on the border with the neighboring country, former party leader Sigmar Gabriel more or less openly advocates arms deliveries to Ukraine, even though the party leadership and Chancellor Olaf Scholz reject this. This is not entirely surprising. Finally, social democrats have failed to clarify their attitude towards Russia. It would be helpful if the SPD would vigorously assume and fill the chosen role of mediator. If she doesn’t succeed soon, the chancellor and his comrades-in-arms will turn even more allies against them. In addition, the reins of action are taken out of their hands. The US is already preparing to end Nord Stream 2 in the event of an invasion.
