After the broadcast of the ARD documentary “How God created us – Coming out in the Catholic Church”, more and more church representatives are in favor of changing church employment law.

A reform is urgently needed, said the director of the Caritas Association for the Archdiocese of Berlin, Ulrike Kostka, the rbb: “All queer employees need legal certainty. They need security that they will not lose their jobs – no matter who is in charge. I I think it’s absolutely great what the colleagues have done with this campaign. And we absolutely welcome this campaign, as Caritas in the Archdiocese of Berlin. And I can only say: everyone is really welcome here – no matter what the living conditions are.”

The Archbishop of Berlin, Heiner Koch, made a similar statement. Church labor law is currently being reviewed, he told rbb. The evaluation will be presented and discussed in the second half of the year, says Koch: “We will urgently talk about this issue. I can’t imagine that we won’t make significant changes on this issue. I will advocate a change there – but I will I would like to wait for this evaluation now. I have already agreed with our head of human resources here in Berlin that if such a case occurs here at the diocese level, that a person has problems due to sexual orientation or is not accepted or is threatened with being dismissed, I will be informed immediately. But – as I said – I hope for a fundamental regulation in the new version of the labor law, which can be expected in the second half of the year.”

Koch also said that a commission would be set up in the coming weeks to deal with cases of abuse in the Catholic Church in Berlin. Koch criticized Pope Benedict in this context: “What I expect from him is that when he says I no longer have that in mind or I saw it wrong, that he also says so and apologizes.”
