About 70 million people are affected by heavy snowstorms on the east coast of the USA. The weather service warns of dangerous conditions. More than 5000 flights have been cancelled.

A severe winter storm is currently sweeping across the east coast of the United States, and there are severe weather warnings for around 70 million people. A state of emergency has been declared in the states of New York and New Jersey.

According to the FlightAware website, around 5,000 flights have been canceled since Friday, and more than 700 more have been canceled for Sunday. The Amtrak rail company suspended or restricted train service on the Boston-Washington route.

The weather service warned of “dangerous snowstorm conditions” in parts of the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts and “isolated power outages”. He predicted more than a meter of fresh snow for the Boston region alone.

Worry about possible “whiteout”

The cities of Boston and New York and their surroundings have been hit the hardest so far. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu declared a snow emergency. She warned of a “historic storm”.

Ten centimeters of snow fell in New York. However, Mayor Eric Adams warned on Twitter that around 30 centimeters of fresh snow were expected. He called on all New Yorkers to stay at home if possible. New York State Governor Kathy Hochul also advised citizens to stay home at the weekend.

Authorities from Virginia to Maine warned people not to take to the streets as “whiteout” could occur. With this weather phenomenon, people can lose their bearings.

Also frost warnings for the south

The US state of Rhode Island banned all car driving except for emergencies. Delaware only allowed essential trips in some counties. A ban on heavy-duty trucks driving on freeways was imposed in Massachusetts for most of Saturday.

Frost warnings have even been issued for the south. In Florida, people have been urged to beware of iguanas that could fall from trees, paralyzed by the cold. The animals can weigh up to nine kilograms.

According to the weather service, the snow and ice storm is likely to continue to intensify rapidly, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as a “bomb cyclone” (bomb cyclone). Just two weeks ago, a heavy snowstorm caused massive power and flight failures in the eastern United States.
