IMK boss Herrmann on corona protests: “Don’t lump everyone together”

Bavarian Minister of the Interior: Freedom of assembly should not be questioned / extremist tendencies should be monitored more closely

Osnabruck. The new chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK), Joachim Herrmann (CSU), calls for a differentiated view of the participants in protests against the Corona policy. “You have to make a clear distinction and not lump all protesters together,” said the Bavarian interior minister in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). As long as someone only protests against restrictions or against excessive bureaucracy and state regulations, that is absolutely permissible: “They are not automatically extremists or enemies of the constitution.”

Nevertheless, there are also right-wing extremists among the participants, but this varies from state to state. The proportion is higher in Saxony, Thuringia or Brandenburg, but he estimates it to be significantly lower in Bavaria. The state must keep an eye on these participants – this is a particular concern for him as IMK chairman: “In particular, I will campaign for increased observation of extremist efforts in the scene.”

The minister announced tough action against violent protests against the Corona measures – but at the same time he opposed Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), who had asked the demonstrators to stop taking their protest to the streets: “The freedom of assembly as a whole is not to be questioned.”

Because of the many different participants, Herrmann does not assume that the Corona protests will result in a collection movement of dissatisfied citizens. The IMK boss said: “The protest scene is politically far too heterogeneous for that.” There are people there who would otherwise vote for the Greens or the FDP, but of course also voters for the AfD. “It’s all mixed up in terms of party politics, mixed with esotericists and conspiracy theorists. They won’t come together under one roof because their other views are far too different.”

IMK boss Herrmann wants to take on the messenger service Telegram

CSU politician: A Germany-wide shutdown alone would not be enough

Osnabruck. The new chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK), Joachim Herrmann (CSU), wants to take on the messenger service Telegram. “We have to deal with Telegram critically and hard. We cannot accept that such a provider eludes the rule of law,” said the Bavarian Minister of the Interior in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). According to the security authorities, the chat service is used particularly often by right-wing extremists and conspiracy believers for mobilization purposes.

Herrmann thus supports a proposal by Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), who has brought up the topic of switching off Telegram, but also said: “Regardless of the legal hurdles: Germany-wide switching off alone would not be enough.” Because it is technically possible to switch to servers in other parts of the world and still use Telegram – or the milieu switch to other communication services. That’s why a European solution is needed, according to the minister: “In my opinion, it would be important for the European Union to act together. So the topic still needs intensive discussion.”
