The Archbishop of Freiburg, Stephan Burger, was shocked by the results of the latest report on abuse in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. “Once again, the dimension of what abuse has done in the Catholic Church and what it triggers for the believers and entails a loss of trust becomes visible,” said Burger in an interview with the Badische Zeitung. With the participation of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. make the matter particularly explosive.

Burger joined the call of the Standing Council of the German Bishops’ Conference for a “comprehensive cultural change in the church”. He said the church “has taken the blame” for discriminating against homosexuals and that labor laws need to be revised. In order to prepare the church for the future, he needs to talk to believers and employees. For him, the Christian message is “stronger than all the failures and mistakes and sin that happens in the church”. The Freiburg abuse report will probably be published in the first half of 2022.

The interview was conducted by political editor Siegrun Rehm and BZ editor-in-chief Thomas Fricker – http://mehr.bz/bof8635(BZ-Abo)
