Today, the AfD parliamentary group in the Committee for Environmental and Consumer Protection submitted a motion demanding that cattle raised for slaughter in Germany may only be slaughtered according to German and animal welfare standards. It is also required that the slaughtering must take place in the nearest slaughterhouse and that the transport of live animals for slaughter abroad be stopped.

To do this Ralph Stadler, agricultural policy spokesman for the AfD parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament, as follows:

“It must be in our common interest to permanently end animal suffering wherever possible. Many successes have already been achieved in recent years, starting with the rearing and husbandry of the animals and slaughtering them. The German slaughter standards belong among the highest in the world when it comes to slaughtering in accordance with animal welfare.

Everywhere people insist on sustainability and climate protection, but in the reality of our globalized, work-sharing world, animal transports by truck and ship across Europe and to third countries cause unnecessary misery for our livestock. A ban on livestock transports abroad and the associated long journeys could save the animals considerable suffering. In Bavaria, however, livestock transports were only restricted, but they are still permitted if all applicable animal welfare standards are observed.

Unfortunately, the old parties rejected this animal welfare-promoting application by the AfD without addressing the legitimate demands for animal welfare. Through their attitude of refusal, they accept the suffering of animals. For the AfD it is clear: We will continue to work for animal welfare and will not back away from our demands.”
