University clinic director calls for clear vaccination quota goals – and if necessary vaccination

Jochen Werner: Politicians must set a deadline – “Without a high vaccination rate, we remain hostage to the pandemic”

Osnabruck. The director of the University Hospital Essen, Jochen Werner, advocates massive efforts to increase the vaccination rate in Germany. “Without a high vaccination rate, we will remain hostage to the pandemic for much longer,” writes the doctor in a guest article for the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). Werner demands: “First of all, everything has to be tried with an even greater effort to noticeably increase the vaccination rate.” There are still many people who are in principle willing to be vaccinated, who have doubts, but who could be convinced by tailor-made information and low-threshold offers. In addition, politicians must formulate clear goals with clear consequences, for example a vaccination rate of 80 to 85 percent by spring. If the goal is achieved, a general vaccination requirement can be dispensed with. “In the other case, politicians must then vote for compulsory vaccination in the interests of the common good – a decision from which all groups in society would benefit,” says Werner.
