Shanghai Electric Partners with Confucius Institute, University of Karachi (CIUK) to Launch New Education Opportunity for Pakistani Workers at Thar Block-1 Integrated Coal Mine and Power Generation Project and Surrounding Communities; the joint initiative aims to improve the skills of the project staff and open up better job prospects for the students in the southern Pakistani province of Sindh.

The initiative offers free access to Chinese classes to Pakistani project workers and students in the city of Islamkot and surrounding towns and villages. CIUK teachers provide them with textbooks and other language learning materials free of charge. So far 40 workers and 60 students have registered for the first course.

“As a leading provider of energy solutions, Shanghai Electric is committed to educating the next generation of electrical engineers and technicians and enabling more students to enter the energy industry. In our previous initiatives, the Thar Block-1 project organized on-site training sessions to help local workers improve their skills and invited experienced technicians to share their experiences with newly hired employees,” said Meng Donghai, deputy head of the Shanghai Electric Power Generation Engineering Company.

“We hope that Chinese language training can provide local workers and students with useful skills that will help them in their future careers, and that it will strengthen the connection between the two cultures and promote mutual understanding and Sino-Pakistani friendship,” added Meng.

“The Chinese language training program launched by Shanghai Electric will be beneficial to the students in a remote area like Islamkot. It is a valuable opportunity for upskilling that is unique and they learn more about Chinese culture and can find better jobs in the future,” said Muhammad Nasiruddin Khan, CIUK’s Pakistan Director.

“Working with Chinese employees at the Thar Block-1 integrated coal mine and power generation project, I have developed a growing interest in learning the Chinese language. I am excited about the opportunity Shanghai Electric is offering me to learn Chinese. This improves my job prospects as there are a large number of Sino-Pakistani cooperation projects in Pakistan. Being able to speak Chinese is an important skill,” said a student who took part in the program.

In 2017, Pakistan formally joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and increased Sino-Pakistani cooperation has made Chinese a sought-after course for those looking to work for local Chinese companies. The rise of Chinese courses in the country has helped close the communication gap between China and Pakistan and has also enabled more locals to land their dream jobs.

In recent years, Shanghai Electric has supported Pakistan in the construction of numerous energy infrastructure facilities with its industry-leading energy technologies under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The EPC contract for the Thar Block-1 integrated coal mine and power generation project, which includes two 660 MW coal-fired power plants and a 7.8 million tonne annual coal mine, was signed in April 2019. The power plants are important CPEC projects and will optimize Pakistan’s energy mix and significantly increase the country’s energy security.
