The Berlin public prosecutor’s office has initiated investigations against the entire federal executive committee of the Greens because of controversial special corona payments. According to the Attorney General’s Office, there is “the initial suspicion of infidelity”.

The Berlin public prosecutor’s office has initiated investigations against the entire federal executive board of the Greens because of controversial special corona payments. There is “the initial suspicion of infidelity,” said the spokesman for the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office, Martin Steltner. The reason for this was “several ads” from private individuals. Steltner thus confirmed a report by “Spiegel”.

The case is about a “corona bonus” from the party’s own assets, which the federal executive board is said to have granted itself in 2020. According to “Spiegel”, the special payments amounted to 1,500 euros each. The bonus was intended to offset the burdens of working from home and remodeling the building.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Economics Minister Robert Habeck, both of whom are currently Green Party chairmen, are on the six-member federal executive board. Other members are the deputy federal chairmen Jamila Schäfer and Ricarda Lang, federal manager Michael Kellner and treasurer Marc Urbatsch.

Massive complaints from internal party auditors

Last year, the bonuses were massively criticized by internal party auditors. In a report quoted by the dpa news agency, the examiners criticized the fact that all six board members had received the bonus of 1,500 euros in addition to the employees of the Greens federal office.

Such a bonus, the green auditors complained, was not covered by internal party rules. The board members could have received a maximum of 300 euros, which was “set by collective agreement”.

Since everyone except Urbatsch is also a member of the Bundestag, Parliament had to be informed before the investigation could be initiated. According to “Spiegel”, this happened in December, and the public prosecutor’s office formally initiated the criminal investigation on January 6th.

Greens spokesman: Board members cooperate “fully”

A spokesman for the Greens said that the members of the federal executive board had been informed about the investigation ARD Capital Studio. The Corona bonuses were paid in 2020 to all employees of the federal office and at the same time to the federal executive board. “The federal board is the highest executive body and was therefore authorized from the point of view of all those involved to take appropriate decisions,” said the spokesman.

It has already been reported that the bonuses were paid out and that the members of the Federal Executive Board had paid them back. “The board members concerned and the federal office are cooperating fully with the public prosecutor’s office in order to clarify the matter quickly and completely.”
