the Żabka Group is now the largest chain of autonomous stores in Europe after the launch of 25 AI-driven stores called Żabka Nano. The innovative concept enables fast shopping without cashiers, queues or cash to sell products that are precisely tailored to customers’ location and demographics. The stores are operated in different formats, e.g. e.g., standalone container-based vending machines, traditional brick-and-mortar stores, and store-within-a-store outlets. They all use AI-powered computer vision technology developed in close collaboration with American tech company AiFi.

Thanks to the skillful use of the latest technologies, the Żabka Group is now the fastest growing grocery chain in Europe, with 1100 traditional stores opened in 2021 and more than 7900 traditional modern convenience stores. At the same time, the company participates in the technological revolution with the development of autonomous shopping experiences to improve customer convenience and in-store processes. In cooperation with AiFi, Żabka Group developed the autonomous concept Żabka Nano and opened the first store in June 2021 in Poznań, which then expanded to 25 locations across Poland within six months. By integrating with the mobile application Żappka, which is already used by over 8 million users, an ecosystem of digital services has been created that offers customers more convenience.

Żabka Nano stores are already being tested by customers at 25 locations in 6 cities across the country. They can be used by customers in Gdańsk, Kraków, Piaseczno, Poznań, Sopot and Warsaw. They can be found in a wide variety of places, including city centers, train stations, subway stations, universities or in large shops.

“We are constantly working to further develop and improve the unique concept of Żabka Nano. We rely on its flexibility – we are able to open more independent sales outlets both in high-traffic locations, such as in narrow city centers or subway stations, and in large-scale stores. We are also one of the first in the world to develop a concept where you can enter the store with a payment card,” says Tomasz Blicharski, Managing Director of Żabka Future.

Since the opening of the first Żabka Nano store, interest in this concept has grown. Several thousand people have already experienced the convenience of shopping in the autonomous Żabka Nano markets. And the high NPS score of over 80 confirms that the experience exceeds consumer expectations.

Żabka Nano uses innovative methods to authorize and pay for purchases. The first stores were connected to the chain’s mobile app, which allowed both access and payment for purchases. Currently, the store-in-a-store model allows customers to access the store with any payment card. Shopping itself takes just a moment – the journey invites customers to seamlessly grab products from the shelf and exit the store when they’re done without going to the checkout. Deployed across all stores, AiFi’s innovative platform is a camera-based solution that uses computer vision and advanced machine learning to recognize products being picked from shelves and automatically complete payment as customers exit the store. The system does not use biometric data or facial recognition to identify customers to ensure privacy and security.

The product mix in the Żabka Nano stores is tailored to the specifics of the location and customer profile. Depending on the format, it includes between 450 and 1500 products. Each Żabka Nano store has Żabka own-brand products, including nutritious and healthy snacks, juices and smoothies, ready meals and freshly ground coffee from the coffee maker, among others.

Autonomous Żabka businesses will be launched within the Żabka Future Business Incubator, which will combine three elements: managing and searching for innovations, transforming them into new products and services, and commercializing them. The project also fits perfectly into the strategy of the Żabka Group aimed at implementing measures to maintain climate neutrality – the Żabka Nano uses only the equivalent of green energy for its activities.
