Stuttgart. Today the Porsche Design brand anniversary begins with a spectacular start in the Porsche Museum. 50 years of “Engineered Passion” – a philosophy that always combines puristic design language with intelligent function. Founded in 1972 by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, Porsche Design has been developing products whose style is defined by timelessness for five decades.

On this memorable occasion, the digital launch event took place in the presence of Dr. Jan Becker, CEO Porsche Lifestyle Group and Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management and Member of the Board of Management for Finance and IT, Porsche AG with world premieres from the automotive and watch world.

A particularly emotional highlight was the video message from Hans-Peter Porsche, the co-founder of the Porsche Design brand and brother of Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the legendary Porsche 911.

Every product still stands for exceptional precision and performance at the highest technological level: starting with the first completely black, legendary Chronograph I, to sunglasses with an innovative interchangeable lens function, writing implements, bags & luggage, objects such as a pipe and innovative kitchen appliances to the Development of a unique hotel brand.

The Porsche Museum is the perfect setting for the presentation of the anniversary editions of the Chronograph I, among others Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition as well as for the world premiere of the Porsche sports car models from 1972 and 2022 as a tribute to half a century of design history.

The six-month special exhibition will also open here at the same time, providing insights into the exciting corporate history of Porsche Design through a wide range of information and unique exhibits.

Following this premise, FA Porsche created one of the most important design objects of contemporary history with the Porsche 911. His vision of taking the principles and myth of Porsche far beyond the limits of the automobile lives on in all Porsche Design creations and product developments to this day.

The 50Y Porsche Design campaign stages the special importance of the aspect of “time” throughout the anniversary year. Chronograph I marks the zero hour in the history of the company. FA Porsche’s first product design, the world’s first black chronograph, was a trendsetter of its time and remains a pioneering design icon for the brand to this day. In addition, this revolutionary timepiece was the first design that transferred automotive aesthetics and technological standards to other product worlds. That is why in the anniversary year both extraordinary watches and special sports cars are the focus of communication. The new edition of the first Porsche Design watch in the form of the Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition and des Chronograph 1 – 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design and the world premiere of Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa Classic and des limited special model 911 Edition 50 Years of Porsche Design are flanked by unique events, exclusive releases and the limited 50Y Capsule Collection.

What all products have in common is the inspiration from the designer heritage, which is skilfully brought into the present and presented in a new way for the brand’s birthday.

It’s about time for Targa and Timepiece

For the anniversary, the Chronograph I appears in a new edition: The Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition, limited to 500 pieces, is a homage to the original from 1972 and at the same time technically state of the art.

“Time flies, but design remains: in this sense, the Porsche Design Chronograph I in its new edition from 2022 reflects the design approach of FA Porsche unchanged. This special timepiece or one of our other product highlights will hopefully continue to become a companion of the younger generations in the future .” explains Dr. Jan Becker on the brand’s most important product categories.

While the design has remained completely unchanged, the watch is powered by a powerful, modern Porsche Design automatic movement with COSC certification. The dial, crown, clasp and case back bear the historic Porsche Design logo. The tachymeter scale around the dial as well as the day and date display are in the 1972 typography. The high-performance material titanium, which is also often used in automobile construction, was used for the case and bracelet.

As a reminder of the birth of the brand, the 1972 Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa shines in the form of a restored one-off. The vehicle was extensively modified by Porsche Classic in close cooperation with Porsche Design and clearly bears the signature of FA Porsche. Equipped with special details inspired by the Chronograph I, the vehicle combines origin and modernity.

Porsche is also honoring the 50th anniversary of Porsche Design with the launch of a special model limited to 750 vehicles: the 911 Edition 50 years of Porsche Design. With its equipment details, it refers to typical designs and style elements from Porsche Design. The extraordinary vehicle can be supplemented with an associated timepiece, the Chronograph 1 – 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design. This watch is reserved exclusively for buyers of the Porsche anniversary model. It is also limited to 750 pieces and is inextricably linked to the sports car via the limitation number on the case back.

It’s about time to tell the story

The emotional short film “It’s about time – 50 years of Porsche Design” brings the history of Porsche Design to life in fictional form to mark the 50th anniversary. The film tells of generations, of yesterday and today, of icons and innovations, of precision and timeless design. It is obvious how strongly the aspect of “time” shapes the DNA of the brand in all areas – and how the legacy of 50 years is carried into the future.

It’s about time to create new icons

The limited 50Y Porsche Design Capsule Collection translates 50 years of design history into new, iconic products using state-of-the-art materials. In addition to watches and glasses, the product portfolio of the collection also includes bags & luggage, fashion & sports and accessories. Style-defining elements are quotes from the legendary “Checkered Flag” racing flag and accents in platinum (satin finish), which run through the entire collection. Iconic sunglasses were relaunched for the Eyewear Editions, supplemented by the innovative Porsche Design P’8950 Iconic 3D. The look of these avant-garde sunglasses is only possible thanks to the latest 3D printing manufacturing technology, in which titanium powder is fused. The model pays homage to the legendary Shield glasses from 1979. The Porsche Design 50Y P’8478 is the contemporary version of the legendary exclusive glasses with teardrop-shaped lenses and the characteristic interchangeable lens mechanism. These, as well as the Porsche Design 50Y P’8928, a popular and modern Squared Aviator form of interchangeable lens goggles, will be available as limited product bundles.

It’s about time to get inspired

The exclusive Coffee Table Book “50Y Porsche Design” published to mark the anniversary pays tribute to the founding father and makes the history of the brand and the Porsche Design attitude to life tangible. The book, designed in the style of a high-quality magazine, takes the reader on a creative journey through three eras: past, present and future. Twelve chapters show the visions of the innovative design masterminds from Zell am See, reveal the creative power of the brand and present the philosophy behind the products – illustrated by fascinating pictures. The content is supplemented with articles by inspiring authors such as trend researcher Carla Buzasi. Porsche Design fans around the world can look forward to this book.
