On the occasion of Gerhard Richter’s 90th birthday, MDR KULTUR is using the large multimedia project “ostKUNSTwest” to tell the art history of Germany in East and West after 1945 using around 400 selected works of art, photographs and videos. From January 24th online at ostkunstwest.de and as an accompanying podcast in the ARD Audiothek.

“ostKUNSTwest” highlights the most important artists, works, trends and tells them in their respective historical context. The all-German perspective opens up exciting contrasts and surprising connections that contribute to a common understanding of art. The spectrum ranges from the first all-German art exhibition in Dresden in 1946 to the “documenta” in Kassel in 1955, the feminist avant-garde to the New Leipzig School, from the Bitterfeld Way to crypto art.

“We want to tell German-German art history at eye level for a broad audience. To this end, we combine art stories from East and West on a common timeline, prepared in a multimedia and graphically high-quality manner. We all have blind spots to art movements in the other part of the country. ostKunstwest helps to close these gaps with lots of images, impartially and with a lot of fun. With our new offer, we invite you to discover, understand and tell others,” says MDR program director Jana Brandt, explaining the intention of “ostKUNSTwest”.

The multimedia project offers an easy-to-understand introduction for every level of knowledge and is optimized for mobile use on smartphones or tablets. In this way, art becomes tangible in the truest sense of the word and can be experienced on the move – on the sofa, in a café or on the way to the museum.

The ten-part, accompanying podcast “ostKUNSTwest” gives an overview of the most important trends and artists in discussions. From January 24th, all episodes will be available in the ARD Audiothek and wherever there are podcasts.
