The foreign policy spokesman for the Union faction in the Bundestag, Jürgen Hardt, spoke out in favor of deliveries of defensive weapons to Ukraine. Germany should deliver “more than just bandages” to Ukraine, Hardt said in the phoenix interview. By excluding arms deliveries so far, the federal government wanted to avoid military aggression by Russia. In view of the deployment of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border, this position must now be reconsidered. According to Hardt, he sees things the same way as the Greens chairman and Economics and Energy Minister Robert Habeck, who had already represented this position in the election campaign.
The fact that Europe has so far not played a decisive role in the conflict is something it has itself to blame for, as it does not have a clear position. A unified European position is a prerequisite for playing an important role in multilateral negotiations such as the so-called Normandy format or at OSCE level. Hardt criticized the fact that the economic measures threatened by the federal government would not be specifically named in the event of a further escalation by Russia. He sees a concrete threat in the Russian troop deployment. It is not about a “danger of war that has been talked about” as recently claimed by SPD Secretary General Kevin Kühnert.
