The Berlin Senator for Transport Bettina Jarasch (Greens) is examining a Senate bill to join the initiative of the German Association of Cities for more 30 km/h. “As a municipality, we need more freedom of design from the federal government when it comes to creating new 30 km/h areas,” Jarasch told the Tagesspiegel on Tuesday. “So I can’t imagine that anyone in the Senate would be against joining the city initiative.”

However, in the Berlin election campaign, SPD top candidate Franziska Giffey spoke out against restrictions on drivers. The topic is also not included in the 100-day program presented by the Berlin Senate on Monday. If the Senate decides to take this step, it would be the most prominent support for the initiative from 70 cities so far. Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) announced last week that it would be easier for cities to set 30 km/h. So far, stricter speed limits have mostly failed due to federal law, which stipulates a speed limit of 50 km/h in built-up areas.
