He revolutionized men’s fashion in the 1960s and helped Giorgio Armani achieve his breakthrough in the industry: now the famous Italian fashion designer Nino Cerruti has died at the age of 91.
Italian fashion designer Nino Cerruti is dead. Italian media and several news outlets reported that Cerruti died at the age of 91 in the north-west of the country, where his family had run a textile company since 1881. He was in the hospital for hip surgery. Cerruti revolutionized men’s fashion in the 1960s and helped Giorgio Armani achieve his breakthrough.
After the death of his father in 1950, Cerutti inherited the family business in Biella in Piedmont at the age of 20. He founded his first menswear company, Hitman, near Milan in 1957, producing elegant clothing on an industrial scale and becoming part of the burgeoning menswear sector. Armani began his career at Hitman in the mid-1960s.
French film star Belmondo among the customers
Armani recognized Cerruti as a creative entrepreneur with “a keen eye, a genuine curiosity, an ability to be daring”. “Even though our contacts have dwindled over the years, I’ve always considered him to be one of the people who had a real and positive impact on my life,” Armani shared. “From him I not only learned a taste for gentleness in tailoring, but also the importance of complete vision, as a designer and as an entrepreneur.”
In 1967, Cerruti founded the luxury men’s fashion house Cerruti 1881 in Paris, the international fashion metropolis at the time, but continued to have production in Italy. The soft silhouettes, use of color and attention to innovative design and tradition have delighted clients such as French film star Jean-Paul Belmondo. Cerruti was soon in demand in Hollywood, too, and his designs were worn in front of and behind the camera by stars such as Michael Douglas, Richard Gere, Jack Nicholson and Robert Redford.
Last collection in summer 2020
Cerutti also launched a women’s line, as well as perfumes, watches, accessories and leather goods. For a time he was also the designer for the Ferrari Formula 1 team. Cerruti sold the company in the early 2000s. He designed his last collection for spring/summer 2020. However, he never broke ties with the fashion house, even though he recently concentrated on the textile business.
