Guest overnight stays, November 2021

24.6 million

+ 165.5% as of November 2020

-24.2% as of November 2019

In November 2021, the accommodation providers in Germany booked 24.6 million overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports after preliminary results, that was 165.5% more than in November 2020, when a ban on private overnight stays was in effect due to the corona pandemic. Compared with November of the pre-crisis year 2019, the number of overnight stays was 24.2% lower.

January to November 2021: 0.9% fewer overnight stays than in the same period of the previous year

From January to November 2021, the accommodation providers recorded a total of 293.0 million overnight stays. That was 0.9% less than in the same period of the previous year. The companies were affected by corona-related restrictions longer in the period under review from January to November 2021 than in the comparable period in 2020.

Number of overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests in November 2021 below pre-crisis levels

The number of overnight stays by domestic guests rose in November 2021 compared to the same month of the previous year by 153.3% to 21.1 million. The number of overnight stays by guests from abroad increased by 275.5% to 3.5 million. Here, too, the effect of the lockdown from the previous year can be clearly seen. Compared to November 2019, the number of overnight stays by guests from Germany was 19.9% lower and the number of overnight stays by guests from abroad was 42.7% lower. In October, the number of overnight stays by domestic guests was 1.8% above the pre-crisis level.

Camping and holiday accommodation trend continues

Broken down according to the type of accommodation (types of accommodation) in November 2021, almost 65.2% of the overnight stays were in hotels, inns and guest houses, 15.9% in vacation rentals and similar accommodation facilities and 1.9% in campsites. Other tourism-related accommodations accounted for around 17.1% of the overnight stays. Compared to November of the pre-crisis year 2019, overnight stays in holiday accommodation only decreased by 6.1% and on campsites by as much as 24.8%. In contrast, the number of overnight stays in hotels, inns and boarding houses fell by 30.0% and in other tourism-relevant accommodations by 16.2%. A corona-related shift is likely here, since low-contact accommodation is easier to achieve on campsites and in holiday accommodation than in other accommodation types.

Methodological note:

All information relates to accommodation establishments (hotels, inns and guest houses, holiday accommodation and similar accommodation facilities, campsites and other tourism-relevant accommodation) with at least ten beds or ten parking spaces when camping.
