In the Syrian port of Latakia there were several explosions and then fires during the night. State media speak of an air strike by the Israeli army – they did not comment on the allegations.
Syrian state media report an Israeli air strike on the port of Latakia. At least six explosions could be heard. The rockets fired from the Mediterranean during the night had triggered fire, reported the Sana news agency. There was great damage to property. The state television channel Al-Ichbarija showed pictures of flames and smoke in the port area. Residential houses, a hospital and shops nearby were also damaged. Initially, nothing was known about the dead or injured.
According to Sana, the struck containers contained oil and spare parts for machinery and spare parts; it is said to have been the second Israeli attack on the important supply port this month. The first was reported by Syria on December 7th.
No confirmation from Israel
The Israel Defense Forces did not comment on the Syrian reports. In principle, however, Israel admits that it has repeatedly carried out attacks in the neighboring country. The aim is to prevent militias supported and financed by Iran from expanding their military influence in Syria. Along with Russia, Iran is the Syrian government’s most important ally.
