The first pharmacists in Lower Saxony are already allowed to vaccinate against corona
Pharmacists are already allowed to support mobile teams – Minister of Health Behrens: “Hope for active participation”
Hanover. Pharmacists in Lower Saxony who have already vaccinated against flu in the past are now also allowed to take corona vaccinations. Initially, however, they are only allowed to support the 214 mobile vaccination teams in the country. This is what the Lower Saxony Chamber of Pharmacists said when asked by the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). Accordingly, since the law to strengthen vaccination prevention came into force, pharmacists have been entitled to vaccinate adults from the age of 18 against corona as a member of a mobile vaccination team. “The prerequisite for this is that you have successfully completed the training of the Chamber of Pharmacists as part of the model project flu vaccinations in pharmacies,” emphasized Panagiota Fyssa, spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony Chamber of Pharmacists, to the “NOZ”.
Vaccinations in a local pharmacy are not yet possible. “We cannot currently estimate when Covid-19 vaccinations can be offered in pharmacies in Lower Saxony,” said Fyssa. First of all, the federal coronavirus vaccination ordinance must be adapted. Once this has been done, interested pharmacists who meet the spatial requirements could be trained accordingly. The Federal Chamber of Pharmacists will develop a curriculum for the training modalities together with the Federal Medical Association by December 31. In addition, the interface to report vaccinations to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has to be programmed.
According to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health, the first pharmacies are already preparing to be able to carry out corona vaccinations on their premises. With the pharmacies there will soon be “another pillar in the vaccination structure”. Health Minister Daniela Behrens calls on around 1,800 public pharmacies in Lower Saxony to get involved in the vaccination campaign. “It has long been very important to me to include our pharmacies in the vaccination campaign. According to the prognoses for the spreading omicron variant, it is more important than ever that as many people as possible get first and second vaccinations or boosters. The pharmacies can now also contribute to this, and I therefore hope that there will be active participation, “said the SPD politician to the NOZ.
With her initiative to let pharmacists use the corona vaccination syringes, the minister received support from the Bremen Senator for Health Claudia Bernhard (Linke) and from central municipal associations, but also received criticism from the Lower Saxony Medical Association (ÄKN). The doctors’ representatives had given concern that the pharmacies, unlike doctors, could not support the vaccination accordingly. After all, there could be vaccination reactions. Serious allergic reactions are rare, but can occur in any patient. Then “in any case a doctor must be called in”. That makes the process not only “unnecessarily complicated, but dangerous,” argued the ÄKN. Minister Behrens opposed this. From their point of view, “in view of the current pandemic situation, there should be no thinking bans”.
