The Hessischer Rundfunk (hr) procures green electricity for the ARD and has negotiated an electricity supplier contract for the years 2022 to 2024 – for the entire ARD and the ZDF. Thus, from next year onwards, the stations will now be producing 100 percent with green electricity.

In a Europe-wide invitation to tender, the hr had identified the most economically advantageous provider for a sustainable energy supply. All of the broadcasters’ boards of directors agreed to switch to purely green electricity, with a small surcharge for renewable energy of 0.00066 ct / kWh for the year 2022. 100 percent of the green electricity comes from TÜV-Süd certified renewable energy systems , according to proof of origin from hydropower in Scandinavia.

With all of the regional broadcasters, ARD is relying entirely on this renewable energy and is reaffirming its commitment to sustainably reducing CO2 emissions and counteracting climate change.

The hr has been in charge of electricity procurement for ARD for many years. For the procurement volume, all state broadcasters and the ZDF have reported their forecast electricity consumption for the next three years: for all broadcasting houses and outdoor studios, locations of transmitter masts and data centers.

The energy transition is part of ARD’s sustainable commitment. The network of broadcasters promotes environmentally and resource-saving management and production. In addition, the ARD 2021 has that “ARD Board Ecological Sustainability” brought into being, which is coordinated by Bayerischer Rundfunk together with the ARD General Secretariat. The new unit bundles ARD-wide efforts in the areas of “Sustainable Media Production”, “Sustainable Operations Management”, “Sustainable Event Management”, “Sustainable Distribution” and “Green IT” and drives them forward. In a binding self-commitment by the industry from 2022 onwards, the ARD and the “Green Shooting” working group ecological minimum standards that they want to gradually implement in all film and TV productions by 2024. In 2020 the network of broadcasters published the first “ARD Sustainability Report” (www.ard.de/nachhaltigkeit).
