The RKI reports 53,697 new infections – the nationwide seven-day incidence drops to 402.9. The head of the family doctors’ association, Weigeldt, believes that further vaccinations will be necessary by autumn at the latest. The current developments in the live blog.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports 53,697 new corona infections within 24 hours. That is 10,813 fewer cases than on Saturday a week ago. The nationwide seven-day incidence fell again to 402.9 from 413.7 the previous day.

The value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected with the corona virus in the past seven days.

510 other people died related to the virus. This increases the number of reported deaths within one day to 105,506. In total, more than 6.47 million corona tests have so far been positive in Germany.

According to a media report, the new corona expert council of the federal government will include virologists Christian Drosten and Hendrik Streeck. The list of the council was completed on Friday, reported the “Welt am Sonntag”.

Drosten, chief virologist at the Berlin Charité, and Streeck, head of the virological institute at the University Clinic Bonn, had expressed very different opinions in the past about the necessary measures in the corona crisis.

In addition to the two virologists, according to the report, Thomas Mertens, head of the Standing Vaccination Commission, Lothar Wieler, President of the Robert Koch Institute, the virologist Melanie Brinkmann from the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research, the physicist Viola Priesemann from the Max Planck Institute and the intensive care physician Christian Karagiannidis from the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine belong to the committee.

The Care Employers’ Association (AGVP) demands that the newly planned care bonus only be paid out to vaccinated staff. Managing director Isabell Halletz told the “Rheinische Post” with a view to Corona: “If you do not want to be vaccinated and thus endanger those in need of care in the facilities, you cannot get a bonus for it.”

The workers in nursing homes, regardless of the area, have a responsibility for those in need. “You and your relatives must be able to rely on the fact that the employees live up to this responsibility,” said Halletz. “This includes getting vaccinated, for your own protection and to reduce the risk of infection.”

In view of the threatened spread of the omicron variant, intensive care physicians expect an increase in Covid-19 diseases in children. “The number of infected people and thus also of children will increase dramatically,” said Florian Hoffmann, pediatric intensive care physician and general secretary of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (Divi), the newspapers of the Funke media group.

Infectiologists advocated shorter intervals between the second and third vaccination. At the moment it is not yet possible to say whether Omikron also leads to more severe disease courses more often, explained Hoffmann. But even with milder courses, the high number of infected people alone could mean that in absolute numbers more children would have to go to hospital than now.

The Swiss authorities have approved the Biontech / Pfizer corona vaccine for children between the ages of five and eleven. “The results of clinical studies show that the vaccine is safe and effective in this age group,” said the therapeutic products institute Swissmedic.

A registration study with more than 1500 participants showed that the vaccine offers children of this age “practically complete protection” against severe Covid-19 diseases, the statement said. Side effects “tend to occur less frequently” than in adolescents or adults.

The head of the German Association of General Practitioners sees the participation of pharmacists and veterinarians in the corona vaccination campaign as critical. It is “questionable if, for example, there is no doctor on site at the pharmacy who can intervene in the event of – very rare – complications,” said association boss Ulrich Weigeldt of “Bild”.

He also expects “hardly any effect on the vaccination campaign” from the veterinarians’ work in vaccination centers. In any case, the vast majority of vaccinations would take place in the practices. “It would be better if as much vaccine as possible arrives in the practices,” added Weigeldt.

According to the general practitioner association boss Ulrich Weigeldt, the current booster vaccinations will not be the last that will be necessary against Corona. “We expect that a fourth vaccination will be necessary in the summer, at the latest in the autumn,” he told the “Bild” newspaper.

He hoped that the fourth corona vaccination could then be administered “in conjunction with the flu vaccination” “in order to make protection against corona into a routine”. It is already becoming apparent that vaccinations against the Omikron virus variant may be necessary.
