Foreign Minister Baerbock has made her first inaugural visits, now she is meeting her counterparts from the G7 countries in Liverpool. Germany will then take over the presidency from Great Britain. Foreign Minister Truss has big plans for the end.

After her inaugural visits to Paris, Brussels and Warsaw, the new German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will take part in two-day deliberations of the G7 heads of departments in Liverpool from today. Germany will take over the presidency over the format from Great Britain on January 1st. Baerbock therefore wants to present the German chairmanship program to the group of ministers, the Foreign Office announced.

Further topics are the relationship of the seven leading industrialized countries to Russia and China, the Ukraine crisis, developments in Iran and Afghanistan as well as global health and climate policy.

British are asking for more money

In the run-up to the meeting, Baerbock met Britain’s Foreign Minister and host Liz Truss. “This weekend the world’s most influential democracies will take a stand against the aggressors who want to undermine freedom,” said Truss.

She promised that the Liverpool meeting would send a strong message of unity. Great Britain also wants to persuade the G7 to provide more money for infrastructure projects in developing countries. This is to prevent more and more countries from becoming financially dependent on China. In the afternoon, the ministers for economic cooperation and development will therefore take part in the G7 meeting.

What position against China?

Observers expect that a possible diplomatic boycott of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in February, which the USA and Australia have announced, will also be discussed. The federal government is striving for a European solution. On Sunday, Baerbock will travel to Brussels, where the EU foreign ministers will meet on Monday.
