At least 53 migrants were killed in a truck accident in Mexico. Crammed into the truck, they wanted to flee to the USA. This year 650 people died on this route – the highest level in seven years.

At least 53 migrants were killed and 54 others injured in a truck accident in Mexico. According to the authorities, the truck in which the people were overturned on a highway in the southern state of Chiapas on Thursday.

The head of the state’s civil protection agency Luis Manuel Moreno said 21 people had been hospitalized with serious injuries and three were in critical condition. The driver’s fate was initially unknown.

Moreno said of the accident, apparently the sheer weight of the many people had caused the truck to tip over. When it rolled over, the vehicle hit a steel pedestrian bridge. According to the information, there were at least 107 people in the truck that was on the way to Tuxtla Gutierrez.

Migrants paid smugglers up to $ 3,000

TV pictures showed a large number of ambulances, fire fighters and rescue workers around the overturned vehicle. Helpers took dozens of bodies out of the truck and covered them with a white sheet or a simple blanket, as video footage from the AFP news agency showed.

The accident happened near the border with Guatemala, the main gateway for migrants from Central America who want to move on to the USA. Truck transport is one of the common methods used by smugglers to bring undocumented migrants to the United States.

Activists speaking to survivors said the migrants got into trucks near the Guatemalan border. They would have paid between $ 2,500 and $ 3,000 to be taken to the central Mexican state of Puebla. There they would probably have had to book a trip to the US border with other smugglers.

650 migrants have already died at the US border

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed his regret to the relatives: “I hug the families of the victims,” he wrote on Twitter. Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei offered his assistance in identifying and repatriating possible victims. Guatemala borders the province of Chiapas.

Mexico recently acted with extreme severity against migrants from Central America, Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti. According to official information, 228,115 migrants have already been arrested in the current year. According to the “La verdad noticas” portal, this is a new high and an increase of 37 percent over the same period last year. In addition, 650 migrants have already died on the Mexican-American border this year. That is the highest level in seven years.

Due to an agreement between the Mexican and the US government, tens of thousands of national guards and border guards are deployed to stop people seeking protection without valid papers on their way into Mexico. This forces migrants to move on increasingly dangerous routes and to engage in unsafe transport.
