Status: 10.12.2021 10:36 p.m.

With a win at 1. FC Köln, FC Augsburg put an exclamation mark in the relegation battle of the Bundesliga and put the competition in the table cellar under pressure.

Despite major staff concerns, the FC Augsburg fought for an important victory for staying up in the Bundesliga. The team of coach Markus Weinzierl won 2-0 (0-0) at 1. FC Köln, not undeservedly – although numerous regular players were missing. With 16 points Augsburg jumped to 14th place for the time being and inflicted the first home defeat of the current season on Cologne.

Andre Hahn (72nd) and Niklas Dorsch (88th) scored the goals for the first away win for FCA in a muddled game on a weak level. Sebastian Andersson (2nd) missed the best opportunity right from the start for Cologne, which fell significantly after a good initial phase. In the table, Cologne remains in ninth place for the time being, but missed the chance to make contact with the European Cup places.

Andersson misses the first chance

The Swede Andersson almost gave FC a dream start, but his header from a few meters flew just past. Augsburg did not hide either. Hahn (3rd) shot powerfully from the edge of the penalty area at the Cologne goal, substitute goalkeeper Marvin Schwänke, who represented the injured Timo Horn, parried the ball worth seeing.

Augsburg coach Weinzierl had to do without his strikers Alfred Finnbogason and Florian Niederlechner, among others. U21 European champion Arne Maier was also missing, central defender Felix Uduokhai, who had just recovered from an injury, was also out after a positive corona test.

Mistakes in Cologne build Augsburg up

Nevertheless, the FCA delivered the fight promised by Weinzierl to Cologne. The guests benefited from numerous mistakes made by FC. Ruben Vargas almost benefited from a bad pass from Rafael Czichos. The Swiss intercepted the pass of the Cologne defense chief, but then shot just past (24th), a little later Vargas missed again (29th).

Cologne continued to have more possession and tried to control. But because there was a lack of speed, ideas and accuracy, the FC hardly came to a dangerous conclusion. After the break, Cologne started stormy – and still almost fell behind. Schwabe was there again against Hahn’s long-range shot (53rd).

Augsburg remains stubborn

In front of 15,000 spectators, the FC continued to try to increase the pressure. Augsburg remained stubborn and vicious in the duels. So there was hardly any flow of the game, which played into the cards of the FCA. Hahn finally struck freezing cold, Dorsch added shortly before the end.

the 1. FC Cologne must play on the next matchday on Tuesday (14.12.2021) at VfL Wolfsburg, Augsburg expects RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
