The more the outside temperatures drop, the more Germany turns up the heating. However, with the rise in gas and heating oil prices, heating will be much more expensive for most this winter. The non-profit consulting company co2online already forecast an average of 13 percent additional costs in September. Some measures can help to save heating energy: Do not close the radiator, vent the heating – and heat-insulating roller shutters as well as smart solutions.

Older windows are often the weak points of a house: one of the largest proportions of heating energy is lost through them. Thermally insulating roller shutters offer great savings potential here. During the day they should be open to let the warming rays of the sun into the rooms. If they are completely closed in the evening, they can significantly reduce heat loss through the windows. “This is ensured by the thermos flask principle: an insulating layer of air forms between the window pane and the roller shutter curtain. Since air is a poor conductor of heat, the expensive heating remains in the house,” explains Dipl.-Ing. Björn Kuhnke, Technical Advisor at the Federal Association for Roller Shutters + Sun Protection e. V. (BVRS). The roller shutter boxes should also be well insulated and any belt guides should be sealed against drafts. With an electric drive, the belt slots are completely eliminated.

Save more with automation

Motorized roller shutters with automatic control are also more efficient. Whether by timer, smart home control or weather sensor – even when nobody is at home, they open and close automatically at the right time. According to a study by the Industry Association for Roller Shutter Sun Protection Automation (IVRSA), homeowners can save up to 30 percent on heating in winter and electricity for air conditioning in summer with the help of automated external and internal sun protection. This not only saves money, but also makes a contribution to CO2 savings and thus to climate protection. After all, heating makes up around 68 percent of the total energy consumption of private households in Germany.

Retrofit and get promoted

Roller shutters, motors and controls can usually also be retrofitted. The experts from the roller shutter and sun protection specialist companies know which products are the right ones for this. The new installation or replacement of roller shutters etc. is funded by the federal subsidy for efficient buildings for individual measures (BEG EM) on application. The professionals also help with this. Further information on products and specialist companies in the area can be found at www.rollladen-sonnenschutz.de.
