Almost 800,000 sales, ten weeks at number one, countless cover versions from Santiano to Saltatio Mortis: There was simply no getting past “Wellerman” this year. The catchy tune of the Scottish ex-postman Nathan Evans is now also topping the official German single annual charts in 2021, determined by GfK Entertainment – and following in the footsteps of “Blinding Lights” (The Weeknd), which cleared in 2020. The other top positions go to this year’s summer hit “Bad Habits” (Ed Sheeran, two), the dance numbers “The Business” (Tiësto, three) and “Friday” (Riton & Nightcrawlers feat. Mufasa & Hypeman, four) as well “Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd (five), again prominently represented.
Nathan Evans on his success: “I can’t believe it. Everything that happened in the last year was just overwhelming and changed my life. And to end the year like this is just crazy, I can still do it all right don’t believe. Thanks to everyone who has supported me so much this year. I can’t wait to see what the future will bring! ”
The most popular German-language title is “Madonna”
For the fifth time in a row, Bausa & Apache 207 are the most popular German-language title of the year. After Bausa (“Was du Liebe nennst”) prevailed in 2017 and 2018 and Apache 207 (“Roller”) won in the following years, the hip-hoppers now come in eleventh with “Madonna”. Overall, over a quarter of the Top 100 consist of German-language songs and almost half of nationally produced tracks. The strongest female act is US newcomer Olivia Rodrigo, who won positions ten (“Good 4 U”) and 26 (“Drivers License”).
Annual album charts: ABBA ahead of Helene Fischer
ABBA won the race for the top of the annual album charts by a large margin. Their comeback work “Voyage” was at the top for three weeks and thus longer than any other record in 2021. In total, the album has already been sold over 400,000 times in this country alone. The quartet would also like to thank its German fans with enthusiasm: “We are surprised and very happy. We are gasping!”
Helene Fischer is in second place in the annual evaluation completely in the “intoxication”. Behind the hit superstar, the 2020s clearer AC / DC (“Power Up”, three) and two other rock bands, namely Die Ärzte (“Dunkel”, four) and Iron Maiden (“Senjutsu”, six). After only three weeks of sales, the British singer Adele (“30”) landed in a respectable seventh place.
Music “Made in Germany” in demand
The highest-placed representatives of the genres folk music, hip-hop, electro and soundtrack are Santiano (“When the cold comes”, five), Kontra K (“From the light back into the shadows”, ten), Schiller (“Epic”, 57) and “The Greatest Showman” (85). Overall, German-speaking artists are responsible for more than half, nationally produced acts even for two-thirds of all top 100 productions.
The official German charts are determined by GfK Entertainment. They cover 90 percent of all music sales and are the central success barometer for industry, media and music fans.
