After the decision of the London court, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is threatened with extradition to the USA, where he could be sentenced to 175 years in prison. In the years of proceedings, however, it is only superficially about the person of the native Australian. In fact, the 50-year-old is a symbol for dealing with whistleblowers and publicists. A look back shows the dimensions of the case. Under the aegis of Assange, Wikileaks had published thousands of documents and videos about war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq and inhumane methods of interrogation in the US Guantanamo prison camp. This was the only way to discover the attack by a helicopter on a minibus, in which several civilians were killed. These publications did massive harm to the US by challenging its warfare. Accordingly, there is great interest in preventing similar cases in the future and setting a chilling example. The case against Assange, which one does not have to consider morally upright, is about the rule of law and freedom of the press. The London ruling sent a devastating signal to investigative journalists and publicists who publish whistleblower documents in the public interest. For the new Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens), who in the opposition had called for Assange’s immediate release, the case could become a test for the promised “value-based foreign policy”.
