Parades by right-wing extremists at their lowest level in ten years

Corona requirements as a reason – Left sees no reason to give the all-clear

Osnabrück. Because of the corona pandemic, the number of right-wing extremist marches has recently fallen to its lowest level in ten years. This emerges from a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a small request from left-wing MP Petra Pau, which is available to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). Accordingly, there were only 14 such events nationwide in the third quarter with just around 500 participants.

The trend is clearly pointing downwards: in the third quarter there were less than half as many marches as in the first two quarters and only half as many as a year ago (for comparison: in the 3rd quarter of 2020 there were 28 marches with 940 participants counted).

This means that the scene is much less active than it was a few years ago. In the year of the refugee crisis in 2015, the authorities registered 430 Nazi marches with almost 60,000 participants, including the Pegida and other “-gida” meetings as many as 590 events. In the past year 2020, however, there were only 164 parades with 16,000 participants, which corresponds to a decrease of around 60 percent within five years.

Left MP Pau assessed this development positively and said: “The neo-Nazi scene’s ability to mobilize is on the ground – at least one positive effect of the Corona situation.” However, it is completely obvious that parts of the Nazi scene are now cavorting with the Corona protests and in the lateral thinking camp. Because of this, too, the number has gone down and is only partially meaningful. Pau demanded: “I expect the authorities to take a closer look at this connection in the future.”

However, the number of right-wing rock concerts increased significantly in the third quarter. With 58 concerts and a good 3,000 participants, the scene was able to mobilize as many people as it has not since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the ministry.
