Public service workers in the federal states receive 2.8 percent more money and a special corona payment of 1,300 euros. This was agreed by the unions and employers in Potsdam.

In the dispute over wage increases for more than one million employees in the federal states, unions and employers have come to an agreement: From December 1, 2022, collective bargaining employees will get 2.8 percent more money. The salaries of apprentices, interns and students in the public service of the federal states will increase by 50 euros in December and by 70 euros in the health sector.

In addition, at the beginning of next year they will receive a tax-free payment according to the Corona rules of 1,300 euros, trainees and students receive 650 euros. The collective agreement therefore has a term of 24 months.

According to the union, it concerns employees, for example in state authorities, university clinics, schools, daycare centers, the police and fire brigade, road maintenance services, forestry or waste disposal companies. In addition, there are civil servants and around one million pension recipients – for example retirees – to whom the qualification is to be transferred.

“Not completely satisfied, but a respectable result”

Both sides had negotiated the whole weekend in Potsdam, but initially failed to find a common solution. The negotiations were tedious and extremely difficult, said Ver.di boss Frank Werneke. One is not completely satisfied with the salary increase. The one-off payment of 1,300 euros will have a strong impact.

“That is a largely respectable result,” said Werneke. “It brings tangible income improvements for a number of healthcare workers.”

“Good compromise”

The negotiator of the federal states, Lower Saxony’s finance minister Reinhold Hilbers (CDU), spoke of a balanced and good result. Everyone involved has shown responsibility. “If it hurts both sides, it’s usually a good compromise.”

The trade unions ver.di as well as DBB-Beamtenbund and Tarifunion had demanded five percent more wages and salaries for the public service of the federal states, but at least 150 euros more per month with a twelve-month term. Healthcare workers should receive an additional 300 euros per month in the form of a table.

The result is to be transferred to the 1.2 million officials. Employers and trade unions already achieved a degree in October 2020 for the public service of the federal government and municipalities. According to this, these approximately 2.3 million employees get a total of 3.2 percent more money in two steps.
