ALDI North and ALDI SÜD also focus on sustainability in the Christmas season and are committed to a green future. From December 9, 2021, the discounters will be offering Christmas trees that come from certified German forestry. With the purchase of the “Climate Northmen”, customers can make a contribution to climate protection and against forest dieback. Because: When you buy every tree, it can be proven that a square meter of new mixed forest is created.

Doing good when buying a Christmas tree – ALDI North and ALDI SÜD are making this possible this year. From December 9th, customers across Germany will find what are known as “Climate Northmen” in all ALDI branches. A special reforestation project in the Sauerland is associated with the sale of the trees, which is unique in Germany. For each Christmas tree bought, one square meter of mixed German forest is reforested. These are woody plants that can naturally bind climate-damaging CO2 – such as deciduous and conifer species. The afforested area has a guaranteed service life of 100 years. “The topic of sustainability is becoming more and more important for consumers when it comes to Christmas tree purchases. We are therefore pleased to be the first retailer in Germany to be able to offer our customers a holistic concept with the Nordmann firs and the associated reforestation project,” says Christoph Wenig, Director Buying at ALDI SOUTH. “Our goal: The sale of the Christmas trees should create 230,000 square meters of mixed forest.”

Christmas trees “Made in Germany”

The “Climate Northmen” offered are Nordmann firs that come from a German GLOBALG.A.P. certified culture. The certification guarantees good agricultural practice and the responsible use of resources. The burden on the environment is significantly reduced both when the trees are raised and when they are harvested. The Christmas trees “Made in Germany” are particularly climate-friendly compared to the usual imported goods. These are regional firs from the Sauerland. Greenhouse gas emissions that are harmful to the climate are saved through significantly shorter transport routes.

“With our Climate Northmen, we meet our customers’ desire for more sustainability and transparency. Our customers want to know where their tree comes from and how they can make Christmas more environmentally friendly,” says Tobias Heinbockel, Managing Director Category Management at ALDI Nord . ALDI is now meeting this need. “With our Nordmann firs, we offer our customers 100 percent German goods at the best price in Germany. And the promise to make a simple contribution to climate protection with the purchase.”

ALDI Nord and ALDI SÜD offer Nordmann firs in two sizes and price categories: 12.99 euros (150 to 175 centimeters) and 17.99 euros (175 to 200 centimeters). The fir trees are GLOBALG.A.P. certified (tracking number: GGN 4002420000000) and also wear the “Respect Nature” Brand that distinguishes products that are manufactured in a way that conserves resources.
