Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his fellow speakers showed on November 9th that one can certainly talk about revolution and Hitlerite coup, pogrom night and the fall of the Berlin Wall, if one describes the long struggle for democracy in Germany, which is interrupted by terrible relapses, and emphasizes its victory and at the same time indicates how fragile what has been achieved can be. One should not only think about all of this in retrospect, one should also argue about how democracy can and must be further developed in times of rampant right-wing populism and pandemic, globalization and climate protection. Nor should one remain silent about the challenge of digitization. One should also discuss whether this requires an enlightened patriotism, as Steinmeier suggests. Or whether more co-determination, more justice and more participation would be more productive.
