For the UN, reaching 5 million deaths from COVID-19 is a failure

For the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, the figure of five million deaths from COVID-19 in the world is a “failure.”

“It would be a mistake to think that the pandemic is over. Restrictions have been lowered in many places, but we have to combine vaccination with surveillance, for example with measures that have proven to be effective such as the use of masks or social distancing, “he said in a statement.

Guterres added that this “devastating” amount, less than two years after the start of the health emergency, shows that “the world is failing, because while rich countries are administering third doses of anticovid vaccines, only five percent of the population africana is vaccinated ”.
