As a contribution to climate protection, Procter and Gamble invests in the protection and preservation of natural habitats all over the world. Among other things, Procter & Gamble donated 25,000 trees to the Arbor Day Foundation (ADF) last year. Last Saturday, the first 6,000 trees were planted in the Eilenburg city forest in beautiful autumn weather as part of the # TogetherStronger campaign with the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald Landesverband Sachsen eV and with the citizens of the city of Eilenburg near Leipzig. The Protection Association of the German Forest Regional Association of Saxony is the German partner in the ADF’s global afforestation network.
The reforestation project promotes the development of a climate-stable, location-appropriate and multifunctional mixed forest in the urban forest of Eilenburg. The forest of the future fulfills a variety of tasks: it is a place of relaxation for the citizens and a habitat for countless living beings for use. Existing natural regeneration, for example of birch, sycamore, oak or ash, is left naturally. Since it is still unclear how nature will develop as a result of climate change, non-native tree species such as red oak and Douglas fir are also planted, which, according to scientific knowledge, can also grow with lower amounts of rainfall.
So that the forests can be a diverse habitat and source of food for a wide variety of living beings, further nature conservation measures are implemented by the local forester. A forest edge is created from dogwood, hawthorn, bird cherry, wooden pear and wild apple. This provides shelter for many bird species and its flowers are an important source of food for insects. Parts of the standing dead wood are also preserved as an important habitat.
Reforestation projects are an important component of active nature, species and climate protection. The region around Leipzig in particular requires a high level of commitment, as it is one of the least forested areas in Germany. In addition, the lower rainfall and higher temperatures triggered by the effects of climate change have weakened the existing trees. The former pure coniferous stocks of spruce, larch and pine were therefore susceptible to insect infestation and were destroyed by the massive populations of bark beetles.
“We are proud to be able to start such a large reforestation project together with these strong partners in the urban forest of Eilenburg and thus to actively contribute to our goal of establishing climate-stable and location-adapted forests in Saxony”, said the state board of SDW Saxony, Norbert Schmid.
