In view of the accumulation of mass brawls, riots and homicides caused by knife attacks and broken beer bottles on the amusement miles in Düsseldorf, Cologne and other cities, North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul advocates the introduction of knife ban zones at the party hotspots of the metropolises. The CDU politician told the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” (Wednesday edition) that a corresponding national ordinance is currently being examined, based on which the respective district police authorities can collect knives during controls. “The establishment of such zones is legally not as easy as some people imagine. This means must be made in court in every respect. But we will seriously examine that,” said Reul.

The package of measures also includes a ban on alcohol in certain areas, the Minister of the Interior explained, “the question also arises as to whether you still have to get alcohol at night at the booth or kiosk? Because alcohol is one of the main causes of rioting and violence.”

At the same time, Reul announced the establishment of a second police contact point in the middle of Düsseldorf’s old town, based on the model on Cologne’s Domplatte. “Manned on both sides by police officers and employees of the municipal public order office.”
