A special premiere for MDR: On November 2nd, 2021 / today, Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk opens its first binational studio in Görlitz. The MDR is thus expanding its commitment to cooperation with radio and television broadcasters in Central and Eastern Europe and creating the conditions for new impulses in cross-border reporting. The aim of the cooperation is to use the different perspectives of the reporters from Poland and Germany in order to develop a better understanding of the respective positions. The focus of the joint research and contributions is the region of Görlitz / East Saxony and Zgorzelec / Dolny Śląsk (Lower Silesia). The content should be used on both sides of the Neisse. The implementation is carried out with the Polish partner broadcaster Radio Wrocław.

“We have been discussing the idea for the integrative studio in Görlitz with our colleagues from Radio Wrocław for quite some time. The origin goes back to our weekly radio format ‘Mensch Neighbor’. Every Sunday, colleagues from the Czech Republic, Poland and Saxony look together at the issues that move people in the triangle in eastern Saxony, even in difficult times of togetherness, “explains Sandro Viroli, director of the MDR regional broadcasting company in Saxony The jointly organized Neighbors’ Day in spring 2020 gave the impetus, when the impressions of closed borders were still very present during the first Corona peak. “At that time, I spoke to the editor-in-chief of Radio Wrocław, Marcin Rosiński, on site in Görlitz. We were quick agreed to finally implement the idea against the background of the pandemic experience “.

Marcin Rosiński Chairman of the Board and Editor-in-Chief of Radio Wrocław: “Radio Wroclaw is now the most cited regional medium in Poland. Our strength is linked to our local presence in Lower Silesia. For several years we have been expanding our network of reporters on site in order to be closer to people and their everyday problems. A joint studio in Görlitz / Zgorzelec is part of Radio Wroclaw’s development strategy – because our listeners live on both sides of the Neisse border and, regardless of their nationality, often have similar joys and worries. That is why we have decided that this collaboration with MDR Sachsen will be beneficial for the listeners in Poland and Germany. ”

In the future, Tomasz Sikora and Klaudia Kandzia will work alternately with their MDR colleagues in the Görlitz office. Initially, three to four joint reports or talks a week are planned for the respective radio program. Long-term key issues are also being planned and will be processed continuously. For example, it should be about the attractiveness of the respective neighboring language or the effects of the energy transition in the respective countries. In addition, MDR editor Peggy Wolter continues to work in the studio as the presenter of the community program “Mensch Nachbar” and Uwe Walter, who lives in Poland himself. Both continue to report extensively from the border area and beyond.

MDR director Karola Wille: “I am delighted that we were able to inspire our long-term partners from Poland with this idea. The view of Eastern and Central Europe is part of the DNA of the MDR, we also want to convey a piece of identity and home here as well as promote cultural understanding and togetherness – even if external circumstances and opinions sometimes separate us. We have been cultivating and living this cooperation for years and would like to further strengthen our role as a journalistic competence center for the border region with the so far unique nationwide binational studio. Due to the immediate neighborhood, the importance for the everyday life of many people in the broadcasting area of the MDR and the multitude of cultural, economic and political points of contact, we want to depict different perspectives. ”

The opening of the binational office will take place within the framework of the MDR European Conference, which will be held on November 2nd in Görlitz under the heading “Europe out of joint? Experiences of a border region. “Primarily investigates questions of regional and communal cooperation during the corona pandemic and also focuses on current areas of tension in European integration. The Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer, Marshal of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, will attend the conference and the opening of the office Cezary Przybylski, the Hejtmann of the Liberec District Martin Půta, the Lord Mayors of Görlitz and Zgorzelec, Octavian Ursu and Rafał Gronicz, and the Director of Radio Wrocław, Marcin Rosiński, are expected.

The opening will take place at the end of the congress day at around 4:15 p.m. in the binational studio at Brüderstraße 11 in Görlitz.
