If you want to take part in the 57th round of Germany’s most famous young talent competition in 2022, you should hurry up. Young researchers up to the age of 21 can only register their projects until November 30th. Young people aged 15 and over start in the Jugend forscht age category, while younger participants from grade 4 take part in the junior category Pupils experiment.

The motto of the 57th round of the competition is “Coincidentally ingenious?” Jugend forscht encourages all young researchers to face the challenge, to research and experiment, to tinker and invent – and to give space to chance. The following applies to all interested children and young people: If you want to participate, you don’t have to be a second Thomas Edison, but you have to pursue your goal with curiosity, creativity and perseverance. And maybe a brilliant thought or a groundbreaking idea emerges completely by chance.

Children and young people who would like to take part in Jugend forscht can, for example, research renewable energies, construct facilities for people with disabilities or program innovative computer software. It is also interesting to get to the bottom of complex physical phenomena, to deal with modern robot technology or to solve tricky mathematical problems. In addition, the young talents can observe animals in their environment or analyze exciting chemical processes.

To register for the competition, it is sufficient to first define the research topic. It can be chosen freely, but has to fit into one of the seven Jugend forscht subject areas: the world of work, biology, chemistry, geo and spatial sciences, mathematics / computer science, physics and technology are available. Research, tinkering and experimentation will then take place until the beginning of January 2022. Only then do the participants have to submit a written elaboration of their research project.

From February 2022, the regional competitions will take place nationwide, in which the young researchers present their research projects to a jury and the public. Whoever wins here competes at state level in March and April. There the best will qualify for the 57th national final, which will take place from May 26th to 29th, 2022. Cash and material prizes with a total value of more than one million euros will be awarded on all three levels of the competition.

“We hope that next spring the competition events will take place in the whole of Germany again”, says Dr. Sven Baszio, Managing Director of the Stiftung Jugend forscht e. V. “Should this not be possible in view of the ongoing corona pandemic at individual competition locations, we offer our regional and state competition partners different options for action. On a nationwide uniform basis, there is individual scope for organizing the events under different pandemic conditions – possibly in a reduced form or as a pure one Online event. This ensures that we will also achieve our goal in 2022: promoting young MINT talents through the competition. ”
