October 2021 was the most expensive month ever for diesel car drivers. This is shown by the current ADAC evaluation of fuel prices in October. According to this, a liter of diesel cost 1.533 euros a month on average, 0.9 cents more than in the previous record month, September 2012. Compared to the previous month, the diesel price jumped 12.2 cents and compared to January 2021 by exactly 30 cents.
Petrol also rose significantly in price: the price for a liter of Super E10 was 1.651 euros in October, 8.2 cents above the September price. At the same time, the price of petrol has reached a new high for the year. Just like diesel, the E10 has gained 30 cents compared to January 2021, but the gasoline price is still two cents away from the all-time high of September 2012.
The price increase compared to October 2020 is particularly striking: a year ago a liter of Super E10 cost 1.228 euros on average – that was 42.3 cents less than in October 2021. A year ago, diesel cost 1.042 euros per liter on average, which is 49 euros , 1 cent less than in October 2021.
According to ADAC, the most expensive day to refuel last month was October 27th for both types: Diesel landed at a new all-time high at 1.567 euros per liter on the daily average. Super E10 cost 1,679 euros that day, but was three cents below the all-time high of September 13, 2012.
The recent rapid rise in fuel prices is also illustrated by a look at October 1, 2021, the cheapest fueling day of the month. A liter of Super E10 cost 1.595 euros, a liter of diesel 1.459 euros. As a result, the price of petrol climbed by 8.4 cents within 26 days and the price of diesel by 10.8 cents.
Evaluations by the ADAC show that petrol and diesel are usually cheapest between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. If you take this rule of thumb into account and take advantage of the price differences between the different times of the day and the providers, you can always save a few euros when refueling.
