In China, some new corona cases are causing nervousness across the country. In Shanghai yesterday the authorities closed the country’s largest amusement park, Disneyland Shanghai, on short notice. Previously, a person had tested positive for Corona in another part of the country who had obviously visited Disneyland in the days before.

Because of this very vague suspicion, around 34,000 people were locked up in the amusement park yesterday, including many families with young children. Everyone had to do a PCR test on site at night and wait for the result, only then were the people allowed out of the park. Although no one tested positive, the authorities ordered all park visitors to stay home for 48 hours and to do four more PCR tests over the next few days.

Hundreds of people in quarantine after the train ride

At the end of last week, two express trains on their way to Beijing were stopped in China. According to the authorities, contact persons of an infected person were on board. When this also vague suspicion became known, the trains had to stop at the next station. Hundreds of people had to get off and were quarantined.

From an epidemiological point of view, the uncompromising zero-covid policy of the Chinese government is successful. Yesterday, according to official figures, only 59 new cases were known nationwide – out of a population of 1.4 billion people.

However, the consequences of the zero-covid policy are increasingly noticeable in the People’s Republic: It is completely unclear how and when China can reopen the borders. They are largely closed for a year and a half for fear of imported corona cases.
