The ZDF co-production “The Black Square” was awarded the Hofer Kritiker Preis 2021 on Sunday, October 31, 2021. As part of the Hof International Film Festival, this is the second prize for the black comedy, which was co-produced by the ZDF editorial team Das Kleine Fernsehspiel. “The black square” was honored with the New German Cinema Award for the best film on Thursday evening.

In the movie, Bernhard Schütz and Jakob Matschenz play two art thieves who get caught in a wild cat-and-mouse hunt while on a cruise. In addition to the two, Sandra Hüller can be seen in another leading role.

“In the brilliant comedy, the ambitious script by the directorial debutant and autodidact Peter Meister entered into a congenial liaison with the courage of a production company. Manuel and Alexander Bickenbach from Frisbeefilms GmbH & Co.KG underpinned the story of the nightmare cruise for two little crooks with the right one Financing and thus laid the basis for a technically convincing and cinematographically coherent implementation, “said the jury’s statement.

The Hof Critics’ Prize 2021, donated by the Swiss Critics Association SVFJ and the Professional Association of German Media Journalists, was awarded for the first time at the Hof Film Festival. That year the award was split and went to two films.

“The black square” is a production by Frisbeefilms GmbH & Co KG (producers: Manuel and Alexander Bickenbach), in coproduction with the ZDF editorial team Das kleine Fernsehspiel and ARTE, with the support of Hessenfilm, Hamburg-Schleswig-Holstein Film Funding, Nordmedia and German Film Fund. Responsible editors are Christian Cloos (ZDF / Das kleine Fernsehspiel), Olaf Grunert (ZDF / ARTE /) and Daniela Muck (ARTE). A broadcast date on ZDF is not yet known.

The Granit – Hof Documentary Film Prize goes to Paola Calvo and Patrick Jasim (script and direction) for their documentary “Luchadoras – female fighters from Mexico”. The prize is donated by the Hermann and Bertl Müller Foundation and is endowed with prize money of 7,500 euros.

The jury’s statement says: “Luchadoras is a courageous film and a powerful sign of new beginnings for women within Mexican society.”

The Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez has one of the highest numbers of femicides in the world. The women here have to be on their guard every day, even just on their way home from work. “Luchadoras – female fighters from Mexico” dives into the world of courageous female wrestlers who pursue their profession in this dangerous city and fight both in and outside of the ring for a new, emancipated image of women.

“Luchadoras – Fighters from Mexico” is a production by Tumult Film Berlin in coproduction with ZDF / Das kleine Fernsehspiel funded by Kulturelle Filmförderung der Bundesregierung (BKM), Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg, Deutscher Filmförderfonds and Filmstiftung NRW. The ZDF editorial team has Jörg Schneider.
