As part of the coalition negotiations, the Federal Association we maintain -Interest representation and self-help of caring relatives eV the MPs involved today one Recommended action to relieve and strengthen caring relatives. Around five million caring relatives are the mainstay of the care system in Germany – they are not even mentioned in the exploratory paper of the possible traffic light coalition.
“The real nursing emergency is evident in domesticity. The Ampel-Coalition now has the unique opportunity to correct the previous failures in nursing policy,” says Frank Schumann, head of the advocacy group and the self-help association of caring relatives. “We need a master plan for care as soon as possible and not a policy of small steps. In addition to improvements in professional care, home care must be taken into account in the coalition agreement, after all, 80 percent of people in need are cared for by their relatives.”
The from we care eV. Recommendations for action developed together with caring relatives to alleviate the nursing emergency in home care relate, among other things, to:
- Measures to improve the compatibility of care and work
- Introduction of a 36-month wage replacement benefit for family carers analogous to parental allowance
- Improvement of the pension protection of family carers before and after retirement
- Development and promotion of targeted relief for special target groups of caring relatives, e.g. families of children in need of care as well as caring children, adolescents and young adults
