Hangzhou, China (ots/PRNewswire)

CHINT Solar, a leading and fully integrated solar company with upstream module manufacturing capacities and downstream project development and EPC capacities, received an award in the “Sustainable Land Management” category as part of the UNIDO Global Call for Innovative Solutions in Cleantech and Sustainable Land Management. The jury rated that 310 MW CHINT desert photovoltaic power plant in Kubuqi, which is mainly geared towards the generation of solar power, has avoided secondary desertification. At the same time, in connection with the strategy of sustainable management of agricultural planning and ecological management, it has a global promotion and application value; to creatively combine the five governance topics of desert, grassland, solar energy, plant cultivation and poverty reduction, to follow the principles of ecological environmental governance, to propose solutions according to local conditions and local employment opportunities through the application of sustainable technologies for land / soil To create governance.

In July 2021, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) together with the FCA, a leading German think tank, organized a global one call to research and promote innovative technologies and programs to address climate change and promote inclusive, resilient and sustainable economic development and jointly launched the global collection UNIDO Global Call 2021 for Innovative Solutions in Cleantech and Sustainable Land Management.

Since the official launch of the call, 294 applications have been received from 71 countries on 5 continents. After the assessment by the jury, four individual champions in four categories emerged from the 23 nominated projects.

The 310 MW CHINT desert photovoltaic power plant in Kubuqi, Inner Mongolia, was jointly invested by CHINT Solar and the Elion Resources Group. The project was started against the historical background of combating desertification in China. The Kubuqi project is the first solar desert project in China and is considered to be groundbreaking for the realization of projects in the field of renewable energies in such a difficult environment.

Unique concept

CHINT Solar has developed a new model that includes sand control, agriculture, livestock, power generation and poverty alleviation. The area of afforestation and sand stabilization is planted with forage grasses, among other things, which are resistant to cold, drought, salt and alkali. Drip irrigation under plastic sheeting, infiltration irrigation and other water-saving devices and technologies led to a vegetation survival rate of over 90% and brought about a containment of desertification and significant greening. The model can now be replicated around the world.

In addition to generating around 14 billion kWh during the 25-year operating period and reducing CO2 emissions by more than 7 million tons, 3,000 jobs were created during construction. The project will promote the economic development of the residents in the vicinity of the project site during the entire duration of the project. The Kubuqi project is a good example of how economic interests can be combined with social and ecological responsibility.

Catalyst for future solar energy projects

Chuan Lu, Chairman and CEO of Zhejiang Chint New Energy Development Co. Ltd, commented: “It is an honor that CHINT Solar has received the award for such an innovative project. We have on the fallow and sandy land leased by farmers and herdsmen A remarkable sand control method was used in building the foundation for the photovoltaic project. It has become the benchmark and demonstration of the desert solar project in China. With the 310 MW Kubuqi solar desert project, CHINT Solar was able to prove that electricity generation is successful with social and ecological responsibility. Such pioneering projects will further improve the acceptance of solar technology worldwide and motivate politicians to introduce funding programs for such holistic projects. “
